John Holman and Sons has been setting standards
in the market since its inception in 1832. The judges
praised Holman's for its determination to set itself apart from its competition.

This year commemorates the 175th anniversary of John Holman and Sons. The wholesale broker has operated in the London insurance market since 1832, providing professional indemnity, commercial property and liability, high-net worth, household, marine, cargo and motor fleet cover.

The judges felt that Holman’s had made significant improvements to its business that had resulted in the company successfully moving with the times. The implementation of new software by chief executive Andrew Holman has helped the business to improve its bespoke offering, and resulted in a 'significant increase in policy count in the past 12 months. Holman’s is head and shoulders above the competition'. In the past 12 months, Holman’s has enjoyed a growth in policy count of approximately 45,000, from 151,000 to 196,000. Turnover has increased by 24% and staff numbers by 10%. Holman’s puts this success down to the fact that it is an independent company that can provide a tailored service to the market. It has a team of area managers whose sole responsibility is to visit brokers to ensure its standards remain high. The wholesaler also offers solutions to help start-up companies.

Holman’s success lies in the fact that it is always striving to address the issues in the market. With 175 years’ worth of wholesale trading
comes a considerable amount of experience in understanding and anticipating the needs of the market. In order to do this, Holman’s continually solicits feedback from its clients so that it can have a
complete picture of the issues of the day and how best to solve them. Three key issues that Holman’s has focused on during the past 12 months are consolidation, online trading and service.

In addition to carrying out surveys to gauge satisfaction, Holman’s also places much credence on the personal approach. Its team
of dedicated on-the-road area mangers has made Holman’s the leader in UK wholesale insurance distribution since the 1960s, with
brokers receiving regular personal visits. At a time when there has been a rise in the number of brokers wholesaling, Holman’s is determined to set itself apart by continuing to listen to its clients and respond positively. This way, it hopes to build on its heritage and remain the UK’s leading wholesale broker for many years to come.
